Fantastic Beasts 3 Makes Dumbledore Gay: Why Did It Take So Long?
WARNING! Contains SPOILERS for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledorefinally confirmed Albus Dumbledore's (Jude Law) sexuality, but it's unclear why exactly the Wizarding World took 15 years to show this on screen. Fantastic Beasts 3 saw Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) soar to power and then fall once more as Dumbledore and his team curb his ascension to Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards. But most importantly, the show explored Dumbledore and Grindelwald's backstory, and the (other) Dumbledore family secrets, including Credence/Aurelius (Ezra Miller) creature Aberforth's (Richard Coyle) long-lost son.
Fantastic Beasts 3 opens with a scene that clarifies Dumbledore and Grindelwald's past and their current motivations. When Grindelwald reminds Dumbledore he once supported him in his pursuit of absolute power over Muggles, Dumbledore replies, "I was in love with you." He thus makes clear that what they had in 1899 was a romantic partnership - something previous films had just hinted at but never confirmed. Their open co
Rowling Lets Dumbledore Out of the Closet
Oct. 20, 2007 — -- Well, it's official. Albus Dumbledore, a hero of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter series and headmaster of the wizarding school Hogwarts, is gay.
That's right, Harry's mentor and father-figure would opt favor a nice wizard to a hot witch any day.
In a surprising new Potter twist, writer J.K. Rowling outed Dumbledore at New York's Carnegie Hall in front of 2,000 Potter fans during a question and retort session Friday night.
After reading an excerpt from the seventh installment of her series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," one young fan asked if Dumbledore had ever loved anyone.
"Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling.
She was initially met with a surprised silence but ultimately the audience erupted in cheers for several minutes prompting Rowling to add, "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."
Rowling went on to explain that Dumbledore fell for Gellert Grindelwald, his childhood acquaintance with similarly brilliant wizarding skills, who eventually went over to the shadowy side and became the predecessor to the i
The third 'Fantastic Beasts' show finally addresses Dumbledore's sexuality front and center — nearly 15 years after J.K. Rowling first revealed he's gay
In 2007, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling made a remark that would echo in the franchise's fandom for years to come. Speaking at Carnegie Hall that year, she said that she had "always thought of Dumbledore as gay" — and that the affair between him and his teenage friend Gellert Grindelwald had been romantic.
Since then, Dumbledore's sexuality has only explicitly existed outside of any of the franchise's main properties, and Rowling's words had never been confirmed on screen. She hinted in 2016 that the character's queerness would play a role in the "Fantastic Beasts" films, telling reporters to "watch this space," Time Magazine reported at the time.
Almost fifteen years after Rowling first confirmed Dumbledore's sexuality, it's finally made it to the big screen.

She made her revelation to a packed house in Modern York's Carnegie Hall on Friday, as part of her US book tour.
She took audience questions and was asked if Dumbledore found "true love".
"Dumbledore is gay," she said, adding he was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who he beat in a battle between good and bad wizards long ago.
The audience gasped, then applauded. "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy," she said.
"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she added, saying Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down" and his love for Grindelwald was his "great tragedy".
"Oh, my god," Rowling, 42, concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction".
