Pride Month is a time of celebration and remembrance for the LGBTQ community. Despite document high support for LGBTQ people in the US, there remain those who seek to disrupt, exclude, and even attack expressions of queer joy. In fact, GLAAD and its partners at ADL documented at least incidents of anti-LGBTQ hate and extremism nationwide during Pride , including the murder of a woman at a gas station in Texas by a stranger who had allegedly shouted anti-gay slurs.

These numbers come on the heels of a newly released report by ADL and GLAAD, which tracked anti-LGBTQ incidents in the US between June and April

The incident count recorded for Celebration ( incidents) is more than three-times the reckon documented during Pride (48 incidents) and a write down high for incidents over the last 13 months. Pride ’s numbers included incidents of harassment, 37 incidents of vandalism, and six incidents of assault.

Breaking it down further, ADL and GLAAD found a recurrence of many of the same trends witnessed over the past year in the incidents seen dur

June is Pride Month

Happy Self-acceptance Month, from First Nations!

“Gay pride was not born of a need to celebrate being gay, but our right to live without persecution. So instead of wondering why there isn’t a straight parade parade, be thankful you don’t need one.” – Dr. Ron Holt

June is Pride Month and it is always exciting to see those first rainbows. It reminds us of the beauty and adore celebrated this month. However, at First Nations, we know that all is not sparkly and colorful, and there is much history behind the Event movement.

We also know that by supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and two-spirit family and friends, we are creating a space of acceptance and appreciation, and not perpetuating the despise and violence that has plagued these communities for too many years.

What is the two-spirit community?

According to Smithsonian Magazine, the word “two-spirit&#; derives from niizh manidoowag in the Anishinaabe language. In , at the third annual Native American/First Nations gay and queer woman conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the term was adopted as part of the modern pan-Indian vocabulary and &#;refers to individuals who identify as queer woman , gay, bisexual, que

'It feels more urgent': LGBTQ community, security experts panic about rising violence amid Pride events

As Pride month events continue in June, members of the LGBTQ community and security experts are expressing concerns about growing anti-LGBTQ sentiment in the U.S.

"We are in the midst of a threat environment that is more complex and more disturbing than any other that I've experienced in my close to 40 years in law enforcement and homeland security," said John Cohen, a former acting undersecretary for intelligence and counter-terrorism coordinator for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and an ABC News contributor.

The current threat against the LGBTQ community is worse than when the mass shooting occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, seven years ago, Cohen says. The June massacre killed 49 people and injured 53 more.

The Recent York Police Department said Friday there are no specific or credible threats to Sunday's Pride protest in the city, but an assessment by the NYPD said the event will take place "amid an elevated threat environment worldwide" related to the LGBTQ community.

Why Pride month is still needed

The following piece was created by a PAPYRUS staff member to celebrate Pride month, and highlight the importance of celebrating LGBTQIA+ people not just in June, but all year round.

Lots of people ask why Identity festival month is still needed, and to some people outside of the LGBTQIA+ community, it can watch like Pride isn’t necessary anymore. But there are many reasons why Event month is still needed, and – as a lesbian woman – I’d like to share with you how I ponder celebrating Pride can be a good thing for young LGBTQIA+ people, including those who experience thoughts of suicide.

Long history

Pride started as a protest called the Stonewall Riots which happened because Police tried to raid the Stonewall Inn in New York. Pride Month honours those who were part of the most important queer rights protests and is a reminder that Celebration can still fight for our rights. It wasn’t until that June officially became Pride Month in the USA. It has since grown into a massive celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride month isn’t just Gay Pride

Some people still call it Homosexual Pride but Pride is for everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community. Some people in our commun
