Review: Mount Gay Rum Eclipse Black
Barbados’s Mount Lgbtq+ is rounding out its “Eclipse” rum collection — currently comprising a Silver and a medium-bodied gold rum — with Eclipse Black, a darker, bolder version of its classic aged rum.
The rum is a blend of single- and double-distilled rums aged from two to seven years. The final combine is then aged in new charred American oak casks and bottled at proof.
I like this a lot. It’s got a big, authentic, sweet rum flavor, and it’s surprisingly smooth on the palate. Nothing unexpected: Rich molasses character, brown sugar, and a lasting finish. There’s some mint and flash chocolate character in there, but it’s basically drowned by the big, serious dark rum sweetness. That’s not a bad thing, since the primary notes are so impressive. Be warned: The hefty proof level is a small dangerous for a rum this smooth. Travel with care.

Mount Same-sex attracted Black Barrelhas been a long awaited review for a number of reasons: first, because anything recent from Mount Gay must be reviewed. Second, because the terrific, best-buy Eclipse Black was discontinued. Third because the USVI subsidies are now beginning to take effect and fourth, because Barbados is one of the most alter countries and styles to be threatened by them. I won't even state the horrid new bottle and label (oops)
The recent history was this. An extremely surprising release - the Eclipse Black - at $19 for a full liter of proof rum, with a stronger pot still element, and some evidence of age (in between Eclipse Gold and MGXO) was actually discontinued, to be replaced by a similar "Black" rum, the current "Black Barrel" at a reduce proof, in a smaller bottle, with a lesser pot still element, and with no age declaration (NAS) and for a much higher price (just a dollar or two less than MGXO down here). When you are sold less - less - less and less for, urp, more funds something is wrong.
My theory: this is what we can expect from threatened Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Haiti, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic -

A hearty, ballsy rum, proof and full of flavor but smooth and great buy for the money.
Notes: Distillery founded in Fermented in oak vats (many distilleries now use stainless steel) using water filtered through the islands coral geology (limestone aquifer) from of an almost ft deep well. A fuse of rums, some of the blend is double distilled in copper pot stills and other parts distilled in a copper Coffey column still (a Coffey still is usually used for Irish whiskey) &#; then aged in ex bourbon oak casks for various periods of time then blended to profile for each Mount Gay product so proportions of each distillate and the ages of each component may vary widely but it tastes the same. An analogy would be the blending of blended Scotch the component spirits may differ widely from year to year but the customer always gets the same style.
