Gay disney shirts
ORLANDO | Orlando’s Big Party Weekend May 30-June 2 filled with pool parties, circuits and celebrations is all tied to the first Saturday in June known as Gay Afternoon at Disney’s Magic Kingdom.
Gay Day at Disney’s Magic Kingdom first took place on June 1, 1991, in front of Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom just before the 3 p.m. parade. The idea was for the LGBTQ+ community to amass, all wearing red shirts, to be visible and to be seen during a time when doing so could be perilous. This year, 33 years later, Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom fell on June 1 as well, the first evening of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and thousands from the LGBTQ+ community gathered, famous and turned Disney red to honor that authentic commitment.

Gay Days At WDW

Hopefully someone who has participated in an event like this can respond my question...
Isn't the whole idea of a "gay day" counterproductive to the agenda of the "gay community"? In truth, isn't the idea of a "gay community" itself contrary to that agenda? I think if I were a part of a group seeking to be accepted as part of society's mainstream, I probably wouldn't want to participate in events that further stand to isolate and segregate.
I estimate my point is that I don't have a problem with Gay Days, I just don't particularly understand the goal. Is it a political statement? If so, what's the statement? Wouldn't it be strange to see "Black Days" where African Americans all came to WDW and wore a certain t-shirt?
To me, "Straight Days," for example, would be just as wrong as "White Days." If the gay community's goal is to be treated equally to the straight community, shouldn't we all be pushing for a society where there is only ONE "community" and not pointing out supposedly meaningless differences just foMain Tag:

Mind if I ask a question?
As a gay bloke who has been to gay days in both 2007 and 2008, I have been struggling with this as well.
When a gay man or lesbian suggests to another to wear a red shirt, he or she isn't telling the entire truth--that shirt, it seems, has to have some cutesy, quippy, shocking and/or double entendre expression on it. My suspicion is that a plain red shirt, over the years, has lost its shock value, and now many gays have to resort to putting expressions on those red shirts to bring the shock value back up to prior levels. I think, as you believe, that there is some element of attention seeking as good when such shirts are worn.
In 2008 I walked past a queer woman in the MK whose shirt said, "No muff too tough." My only regret is that I didn't call her out on it right then and there, and then promptly report her to Disney staff. Gays hold always been welcome at Disney--I never felt as if I was treated in a different way there because I'm gay--but that expression was unsophisticated, offensive, and entirely inappropriate for such a venue. Why should any parent, especially at Disney, contain to explain such a thing?
