That Time Daniel Radcliffe Learned How To Have Same-sex attracted Sex For His Job

Post Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe worked tirelessly to receive audiences to see him as an actor and not just The Lad Who Lived. This meant taking on niche-busting roles, diving deep into challenging material, like the ebony comedy mini-series A Juvenile Doctor’s Notebook where he played a womanizing junkie, Swiss Army Man where he played a magical farting corpse, Equus, the acclaimed theatrical production where he went totally nude, and Kill Your Darlings where he not only played a young Allen Ginsburg, but also performed the rarely represented impairment of a gay man’s virginity. With these projects, Radcliffe isn’t afraid to bare an unexpected element of his soul, or his altogether altogether.

Vulture recently spoke with 10 filmmakers about the sex scenes that defined their movies. Discussing Kill Your Darlings, the film’s openly gay director John Krokidas shared how important validity was, and how to achieve it he and his cinematographer Reed Morano blocked out the very intimate scene fully clothed for the actors to better observe and grasp. “If we got that down and r

It took more than 10 years to convey Kill Your Darlings, John Krokidas’s debut feature motion picture about the Beat Generation of writers, to the screen. Staring Daniel Radcliffe, the film is occupied of (same) sex, drugs and jazz — the rock and roll of the 1940s. Kill Your Darlings is a queer film, made by an openly gay filmmaker. This is no small feat given that Brokeback Mountain, Blue Is the Warmest Colour and even this year’s Liberace HBO biopic, Behind the Candelabra, were directed by straight men.

The film is based on a true case — the murder of a gay man that committed the core writers of the Beat Generation: Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. Drawn-out before they became mythical tycoons, the Beats were united by Lucien Carr (played by an on-the-brink-of-movie-stardom Dane DeHaan), a attractive aristocratic young man who spearheaded the birth of a new literary genre. Carr was involved with a man twice his age, played by Dexter’s Michael C Hall, whom he met when he was 14. The product of that relationship was tabloid fodder.

Finding a advantage actor to play a young Ginsberg was no small task for Krokidas. Though Radcliffe nailed hi

DanielRadcliffe put the innocence of his “ Harry Potter” years behind him once and for all when he played gay poet Allen Ginsberg in 2013’s “Kill Your Darlings,” arrange in the early days of the Beat Generation.

Much of the buzz surrounding “Kill Your Darlings” focused on an explicit sex scene in which Ginsberg would lose his virginity to a stranger (played by Dane Dehaan) he met at a bar. In a recent interview with New York magazine’s Vulture blog, director John Krokidas recalls the process of shooting the steamy moment with Radcliffe.

“Growing up with gay films, there was always some sort of stigma attached to gay characters or gay sexuality, and I didn’t want the sex scene to perceive like that in any way,” Krokidas, whose other credits include “Wayward Pines” and “Black Box,” said. Calling Ginsberg “one of the most renowned queer artists of the 20th century,” he added, “I felt that not including his sexuality as part of the story would be a crime. He wore it unabashedly on his sleeve and helped establish queer sexuality as something you could even talk about in art and literature, so the scene was incredibly significant to capture right.”

Daniel Radcliffe reveals that same-sex attracted sex is “really f–king painful”

Daniel Radcliffe has definitely grown up since his days as Harry Potter (AKA The Boy Who Lived), hasn't he? From tackling serious plays on the West End to sensationally good horror movie The Woman In Ebony, the young Brit has definitely made the transition from child star to seasoned actor - and it seems as if his next project is no different.

Kill Your Darlings, directed by John Krokidas, is set to clap cinemas this Autumn - and Daniel has opened up about what it was like to act a gay man to Flaunt magazine.

Unsurprisingly, his feelings on the subject are very mature and VERY quotable: “I don’t believe there’s any difference between how one falls in love."

"People express love differently, person to person, but it’s not gender or sexuality related. The only difference it made was obviously the actual sex scene, of course.”

We love that Daniel recognises love is just that; love, no matter who it's felt for or by. And we were very interested to hear how he managed to portray this effectively on screen.
