LGBTQ Themes and Undertones in SpongeBob SquarePants
David Ayala
The cartoon show SpongeBob SquarePants has, for almost two decades, fazed fresh children and teens alike. Its unusual form of comedy and humor has appealed to many age demographics. Critics have referred to the show as “charming and whimsical, but clever enough to appeal to teens and college-aged kids.” Despite its extended run success, SpongeBob has not been without its controversies. These take shape mainly due to the uncertain sexual orientation of the title character. Despite not intended to complete so, the show often mirrors themes and undertones that sympathize with the LGBTQ cause, even before the cause was becoming more acceptable. These, however, take the form of exaggerated LGBTQ stereotypes. The controversy also resulted due to the fact that the show was aimed at children. The ask that will be answered in this analysis is whether the show intends to display its compassion to the LGBTQ result in, albeit in a subliminal way, and does the audience, in this case children, are affected by the exposure of this.

Nickelodeon Just Announced That SpongeBob SquarePants Is Gay
In news that will perhaps be unsurprising to many, Nickelodeon just appeared to form the announcement that the beloved children's TV personality SpongeBob SquarePants is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.
The network marked Pride month with a post on Twitter, stating that it was "Celebrating #Pride with the Gay community and their allies this month and every month," accompanied by artwork of SpongeBob, Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger, and Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, all in rainbow-tinted hues.
Korra is canonically queer within the world of Avatar, having embarked on an explicitly romantic on-screen relationship with her best friend, Asami Sato. It is unclear, however, whether Nickelodeon were referring to the "community" or "allies" when it came to those pictures of Schwoz and SpongeBob — but the internet has already made up its mind that after 20 years of iconically camp behavior, S.B. is finally, officially out of the closet.
SpongeBob SquarePants started airing in 1999, and has become known for its mix of surrealism and slapstick humor. Several moment

“We never intended them to be gay. I evaluate them to be almost asexual,” he told Reuters at the time. “We’re just trying to be funny and this has nothing to do with the show.”
“Spongebob is gay” became a trending topic on Twitter after Nickelodeon tweeted the photos.
Some fans of the show were excited about the news.

Spongebob Squarepants is confirmed to be gay by Nickelodeon. Thoughts?
In recent news, it's been confirmed by Nickelodeon that iconic cartoon nature, Spongebob Squarepants, is openly gay. This of course has angered some fans of the reveal because the creator of Spongebob, Stephen Hillenburg, said before he died that Spongebob has ALWAYS been asexual like real sponges are in the ocean.
Me personally, I was never a huge fan of this character to start with, so this doesn't bother me that much. However, I do detect it very strange that Stephen Hillenburg would tell before he died that Spongebob is asexual when the character's parents weren't? Yes, Spongebob does include parents on the show.
While I can't tell I've seen every episode of the series, but I did watch quite a few while I was in high educational facility over a couple of decades ago, and from the few that I've seen, they did illustrate Spongebob have a mom and a dad, so if Spongebob is asexual like a real animation sponge, then why aren't his parents asexual too?
Or do we offer that both his parents are asexual and them acting as his heterosexual parents is a facade? Either way, I t
