How One Jeopardy! Contestant’s Encounter Lead to an Memorable Viral Moment
January 15, 2015 was poised to be magical. It was the day of the Oscar nominations, a.k.a. The Authentic Christmas. My pals Chris, Tony, Gus, and I woke at 5:30 for the big announcement and huddled in our jammies like Clement Moore characters. As nominations were peruse, we screamed for the goodies that Academy Santa had brought us. “A surprise nomination for Marion Cotillard! You shouldn’t hold, Santa!” I hollered. A holy morning.
That afternoon I was coasting on Cotillard zealotry when I noticed a missed call from Culver City. Culver City! I saw Ken Jennings give an interview once where he mentioned that when Jeopardy! producers cell him, it’s from a Culver City number. I knew this was my time.
“Congratulations!” a producer said on the other line. “You’re going to be a contestant on Jeopardy!”

Dr. Oz has been hosting Jeopardy!, and people possess strong feelings. After the sad death of Alex Trebek, former contestants hold been wandering in the knowledge wilderness. Dr. Oz as host was the ultimate insult. More than 600 of them signed a letter of protest to the show’s producers. They said:
“Dr. Oz stands in opposition to everything that Jeopardy! stands for. Jeopardy! is a show that values facts and learning. These ideas include promoting supplements that do nothing, legitimizing male lover conversion therapy (which is banned in California, as well as 19 other states), dangerous “cures” for autism, and, most recently, the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19.”
