Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King – longtime friends and one of television's most iconic duos – are setting the record straight.
During a sit-down interview with Melinda French Gates for her "Moments That Produce Us" series, Winfrey and King spoke about their high-profile friendship and the duo shot down the years-long rumor of them possibly dating.
"For years, people used to say we were gay," Winfrey, 70, said in the interview. "We were up against that for forever."
King chimed in, saying people still wonder if they are dating, even to this day.
"I used to utter, ‘You got to execute a show on this,'" King recalled telling Winfrey in the interview. "Because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on Saturday bedtime with people thinking we're gay."

I think the rumor grew out of her almost obsessive love for Gayle and her rather quiet seemingly distant partnership with Steadman. (never married him.)

Introduced by long-time friends, iconic Chicago musician Chilli Pepper, and star host Paolo Presta, Winfrey delivered an emotional and powerful speech. She honored her late brother, Jeffrey Lee, whose memory inspired her allyship.
“Many people don’t know this but, 35 years ago, my brother, Jeffrey Lee, passed away when he was just 29 years old from AIDS. Growing up at the time we did, in the community we did, we didn’t possess the language to comprehend or speak about sexuality and gender in the way we do now. And at the period, I didn’t know how deeply my brother internalized the shame that he felt about being homosexual. I wish he could have lived to witness these liberated times and to be here with me tonight.”
Winfrey was the host and producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show for 25 years, where the show consistently spotlighted an array of LGBTQ issues:
