Jonah Hill has a very basic reason why he recently tweeted his opposition to Russia's anti-gay laws.

"I own tons of gay friends, gay family members," the 21 Jump Street celestial body told me at the Governors Awards, adding, "It's like saying, why execute you think people should breathe?"

Hill posted a photo of himself earlier this month wearing the Human Rights Campaign's $28 T-shirt that features the statement "Love Conquers Hate" in Russian.

"Help us show Russia & the world that #LoveConquersHate," he wrote. "Visit http://loveconquershate.org and @HRC to see how you can help."

"I support anybody doing whatever they want to do to be who they are," Hill explained to us.

Hill critics, be warned—the actor isn't reading any of the detest tweets you may hold sent him. "I don't check that," he said. "I don't go on Twitter to look at myself or the Internet to look at myself."

LOS ANGELES -- Jonah Hill took the opportunity during his appearance on Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio demonstrate on Tuesday to convey his regret for using a homophobic slur.

Over the weekend, the 30-year-old Oscar nominated actor was entity followed in Los Angeles by photographers who were trying to provoke the actor as they followed him and a comrade walking around a neighborhood. At one point, Hill snapped and said a homophobic slur at one of the photographers. The video then made the rounds online.

Stern brought up the incident during an interview with the star, who is currently promoting "22 Jump Street," and Hill said, "This is a heartbreaking situation for me."

Stern replied, "First of all, I can say you're angry already 'cause you're -- it looks like you're..."

Hill explained that he was being hounded by a paparazzo when he made the anti-gay remark. TMZ posted a video of what appeared to be Hill responding to the photographer.

"This person had been following me around all day, had been saying hurtful things about my family, really hurtful things about me personally," the actor told Stern. "I played into exactly what he wanted and lost my cool. And in that moment, I said a disgusting pos that does not at all reflect how I feel about any team of people."
