Same-sex relationships contain been a part of anime stories for a long time. In most shows, we can detect one or two characters of the same sex who are in like with each other. Sometimes their portrayal is quite realistic or interesting while other times they are usually used for comic purposes. Since we hold already made a list of anime with lesbian characters, now we turn our attention towards anime with gay characters.
34. Baban Baban Ban Vampire (2025- )
Based on Hiromasa Okujima’s manga series, ‘Baban Baban Disallow Vampire’ follows a 450-year-old vampire named Ranmaru Mori who has taken to virgin blood. He finds his target in 15-year-old Rihito but must delay three more years while ensuring he doesn’t misplace his virginity. Ranmaru Mori is shown to contain an attraction towards boys and men, making him, without declaring, a male lover vampire who is also a groomer. Japanese animated media is often known as a prime example of representation gone wrong. The visibility of gay, bisexual, transitioned, ace, and queer men in anime is a mixed bag. Tons of anime over the years have featured queer men in positive and fascinating lights, offering nuanced portrayals of characters existing under these umbrella terms. There has also been a ton of fetishistic yaoi that present uncomfortable, homophobic stereotypes.
If you're going to explore anime featuring gay men, it's essential that you understand going in what portrayals are positive and constructive and which ones are destructive.
