Dress Festively for PrideC When a Gay Lock in Richmond was an Introduction to a People Bill Harrison is the executive director of Diversity Richmond, which serves Primary Virginia's LGBTQ communities. Harrison grew up in the small farming community of Emporia, Virginia and moved to Richmond as an adult. This week he led a vigil for the victims of the Orlando shooting, and here he shares about the significance of gay bars in Richmond. “I’ve lived in Richmond since the mid-70s, and actually my initial introduction to the lgbtq+ community was through a gay bar. I was in college, and I had become friends with a guy who was a good friend, and a few months into the friendship he came out to me. I, at that time, did not even know what the word ‘gay’ meant. I knew that I was homosexual, but I did not think that you actually did anything about it. I reflection you would just deposit it in the assist of your mind and marry a woman. “And so when Jack came out to me, he told me about a same-sex attracted bar in Richmond, the Dial Tone. And he said ‘I know a couple hundred gay men,’ and I thought to myself, ‘he’s really a liar, because there’s not 200 gay men in America.’ “And so we got in his red Vega, and we drove down Je hello fellow liberal gay individual! here are some general thoughts in regards to your questions. ------I visited URichmond earlier this summer and absolutely loved the campus, but the more and more I peruse about the school tediously made it move so far down my list I wasn’t even sure if I’d still apply. *APPLY!!! It’s so awesome here, and it really is a nice campus and environment, and you will almost absolutely get financial aid and it is wonderful ------They have my majors, have a beautiful campus, and I’m sure everyone is very nice, but I’m wondering what it’s like on campus for an LGBT, extremely liberal kid. *Okay, so honestly everyone IS very nice. Most everyone comes from the Northeast so while maybe lots of folks are conservative, they all grew up with gay friends, so everyone is incredibly accommodating. I don’t deliberate being gay is an issue. There’s also a ton of liberals here. Maybe not Bernie level liberal, but definitely Hillary loving liberals.
